Region: British Columbia VQA
Bottle size: 750 mL
Bright citrus and fennel aromas are on full display, with subtle, evolved flint characters beginning to show 6 months after bottling. The minerality and fruitiness combine with focused sugar and acid balance to make this wine very refreshing and versatile. The structure and flavours bode well for the ageability of this wine; it will likely evolve well for decades to come.
Nose: Citrus & fennel.
Winemaker: Micheal Bartier
Growing conditions: Located on the slope above the north bank of the South Thompson River, this vineyard receives a climate moderating effect from this body of water. The river has cut a path through limestone bedrock, which is exposed in the cliffs behind the vineyard. The importance of this limestone cannot be overstated, with groundwater picking up minerals and affecting the vines, and eventually the grapes and wine, with this. The two blocks of Riesling were planted in 2008 & 2009.
Winemaking notes: Bud burst occurred evenly by May 9, 2015. Blossom was recorded at 75% complete on June 10, with no remarkable weather events to interrupt this. Fruit set was even and complete by June 22. Hardening of the canes was observed by July 16 and continued through the fall. Veraison was recorded at Aug. 7. The grapes were harvested Sep. 25 & 29, with Brix of 22.2, pH of 3.12, and TA of 8.8. The grapes were pressed whole cluster to settling tanks, racked, and conducted through moderately cool fermentations, followed by a mix of clean racking and sur lie contact. Bottling took place June, 2016.
